This week alone the world was shocked by the suicide of Kate Spade, a fashion icon that one would think had the world at her fingertips and a life so wonderful no one would fathom that she wouldn’t want to exist in it. She was apparently loved by the fashion world and everyone that sported her attire.
Days later the news of Anthony Bourdain flooded our inboxes and social media feeds. Another beloved personality succumbed to end the depression by means of suicide. He was a renowned chef and world traveler. Living a life the many if not most of us will only dream about. Yet, that life didn’t offer enough zeal to keep him hanging on just a little while longer in an attempt to overcome thoughts of the unthinkable.
Folks that have not personally experienced depression wonder why in the world anyone would want to kill themselves, simply because they can’t imagine being in such a state themselves. But depression is real and so it seems, is the voice in one’s head that leads them to believe that life is not worth living. Some are able to fight through it to recovery while others don’t seem to have any fight left in them. Such are the cases of Spade and Bourdain.
I am a firm believer in hope. Even in times when I wasn’t aware of it, I still held out for hope. My hope now is that for every living soul that is struggling with depression and/or thoughts of suicide, that they will reach out to someone, anyone for help.
