Becoming Who You’re Going to Be

Are You Who You’re Going to Be?

Charita CadenheadOn Tuesday, I purchased Michelle Obama’s bestselling book, Becoming.  I have not started reading it yet, but as often happens, my mind sets adrift simply based on the title of a book.  So this morning I happened to glance over at the book lying next to me and the question arose “are you who you’re going to be.”  I thought wow.  That’s something to think about.

Am I?

Am I who I’m going to be?  As for me, I felt like I knew the answer right off the top. No, I am not who I’m going to be.  In fact, I have no idea what God has in store for me because as long as I live and breathe, I’ll be a work in progress.  Therefore, it’s impossible for me to be who I’m going to be at this time.

During this time of year, usually beginning with Thanksgiving, I have a tendency to enter escape mode and bask in my quiet space.  Sometimes I think. Sometimes I simply enjoy the peace that I “create.”  In that quiet time, I imagine that now I’ll be thinking about the possibilities of what I might become.  I already image that whatever I become, I’ll be at peace with it.  I’ll have aged into that space gracefully.  At least I hope so, but nonetheless, I’ll be happy with where I am.

I Am Who I Am

For now, I’ll stay content with who I am today, with all my faults and everything that comes along with it.  I’m packaged and gift wrapped by God himself. Therefore, I am who I am by God’s amazing grace. Whew!  I am so very grateful for being able to say that, because I haven’t always been able to do so.  And for that I am thankful.

Becoming

So I ask you:  Are you who you’re going to be?

Happy Thanksgiving.
