You Don’t Need a New Sofa
Sometimes our furniture can appear to have outlived it’s usefulness. We begin to consider purchasing new furniture. We start going to furniture stores seeking replacement furniture for the pieces that we’ve deemed to no longer fits our current needs. But before you start shopping, you may want to start by asking yourself a few questions.
Start with what is wrong with the what I have? Are there alternatives to replacement? What is it that I want to accomplish? Those are examples of questions that you might ask yourself. In my case, the furniture in question was a sofa that sat too low.
At that point, the sofa was three years old and I was three years older than when I bought it (hence part of the problem). It had become a nuisance trying to get up. It’s a comfortable sofa, but I dreaded sitting on it because eventually I’d have to get up which was proving to more laborious than any human should have to experience. I had resigned myselft to the fact that I’d just have to live with it and enjoy it less.

Until one day I decided to turn the sofa over to see how the legs were attached. Sure enough, they simply screwed into the bottom of the sofa. So I went right to Amazon and searched until I found a six pack of these: https://amzn.to/4fQ2gpp. The photo on the left is my sofa with the replacement legs. The original legs were plastic and only 3 1/2″. It is incredible how a 2 1/2″ height adjustment not only changed my comfort level but also the appearnace of the sofa in my living room.
As we age our needs change but change does not always mean major shifts. It can be something as simple as the topic of this post: changing the legs on a sofa that sits to low.Problem solved. Right?
Food for thought: When you look around your house, is there furniture that you believe has outlived it’s usefulness and why? If so, what are you going to do about it, if anything?
