Is It Time For A Change?

Is It Time For A Change?

by Guest Writer Dr. Veronica Harrington

Many of us run for cover whenever the thought of change enters our mind. We are accustomed to the familiar and routine way of doing things instead of stepping outside of the box and exploring the possibilities that lie ahead awaiting each of us.

Philosopher Herbert Spencer coined the phrase “survival of the fittest” to imply that the most “fit” individuals or an individual’s ability to adjust to change have a greater probability to “survive”.  A known fact about life is that it revolves around change. Seasons change every three months. Similar to the four seasons of the year, we must adapt to the changing seasons in our lives and be willing to induce change for the betterment of you.

Are you experiencing a season in your life in which you are frustrated? Unfulfilled? Exhausted? On the verge of breaking down? Or tired of your routine that continues to reap the same results? If the answer to one of the above questions is yes, then it is time for a change.

5 Tools To Survive Change:

  1. New Perspective-Reprogram your mindset about change. Replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts. It’s easy to let our thoughts gravitate to what you think you are losing, discomfort, and sacrifice associated with the decision to change. Focus on the positive aspects of change, what you will be gaining, and the long term benefits of change.
  2.  Embrace New Beginnings-Change requires you to gradually shift gears from your old habits, past actions, broken relationships, and unfulfilled careers to new habits, new actions, whole relationships, and more fulfilling careers. You can’t have one foot forward and one foot dragging behind due to fear of the unknown. Explore the “new” and expect greater and bigger things ahead of you.
  3. Strategic Planning-Develop a written plan that details your starting point, destination, and the process that will get you to your destination. What is your passion? Do you have a desire to write a book, be an entrepreneur, further your education, travel the world, or start a non-profit organization that will impact the world? Your passion is achievable when you approach it with bite size pieces. Write it down and just do it!
  4. Have Fun-Life was meant to be lived in abundance.  Take the time to enjoy and appreciate each new day.  Experiment with a new hairstyle, purchase a new handbag, enjoy a much needed vacation, or turn the music up and sing as loud as you can. Live your life without limits as long as you have breath in your body.
  5. Be Happy-You are responsible for your own happiness. You are more productive and operate on the most optimal level when you are happy and energetic. Laugh more, smile more, and be happy. Life is a journey that consists of changes, but you can appreciate each change and challenge as it contributes to a new and improved YOU!
